Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the incubation (hen?s bird) period, incubation efficency, egg yield and weight, number of brood, adult alive weight, vitality, feed consumption of the tumbler pigeons which are raised in the coops of 5 commercial enterprises located at Altındağ, Sincan, Beştepe (1 establishment on each) and Uluğbey (2 establishments) districts of Ankara, between the dates of the 1st of September 2006 to the 1st September 2007.In this study 200 tumbler pigeons were used consisting of equal number of male and female. The average incubation period was determined as 19,49 ± 0,04 days. The effect of the incubation period of the season was found significant (P<0,001) but the effect of hen?s age was not found significant. The highest incubation efficiency was found in summer with 94,00 % and in autumn with 93,20 % and the lowest incubation efficiency was found in spring with 77,50 %. In terms of incubation efficiency the differences between seasons (P<0,001) were found significant. The highest incubation efficiency of the hen?s age was identified 89,00 % with the middle age group, the lowest yield was identified. 85,70 % in the young hen?s the effect of hen?s age to the incubation efficiency is insignificant. According to season groups, number of eggs, respectively, in fall, winter, spring and summer was found as 4,31 ± 0,11, 3,59 ± 0,01, 3,76 ± 0,07 and 2,00 ± 0,00. The effect of season value was found significant (P<0,001). In the number of eggs according to the hen?s age young, middle-aged and elderly, respectively, was found as 3,40 ± 0,10, 3,46 ± 0,09, and 3,43 ± 0,11 and the values between groups was found statistically insignificant. With regards to the age, the annual number of eggs per pigeon by young, middle-aged and elderly respectively was found 13,68 ± 0,16, 13,55 ± 0,15, 13,72 ± 0,13 number of eggs recorded as insignificant when they were compared to age and they were found mostly in elderly group, at least in middle-aged group. During the incubation 1, 10 and hatching egg weight per day 19,3 % loss of weights effect season was found significant (P<0,05, P<0,01, P<0,001) but the effect of hen?s age were not significant. The average weight of total of 1620 eggs were identified 16,85 ± 0,05 g. The effect of season on egg weight was found significant (P<0,01) but the effect of hen?s age were not significant. The average alive weight was obtained at day 1, 8, 16, 24, 30 and 60 was found to be respectively, 39,26 ± 0,79, 140,52 ± 0,90; 188,87 ± 0,47; 240,89 ± 0,37, 0,52 and 250,16 ± 257,66 ± 0,16 g. The impact of season to increasing alive weight1 st, 8 th, 16 th and 60 th days were found significant (P<0,05, P <0,001), 24 th and 30 th days were found insignificant; the effect of hen?s age was found insignificant on all days. The average of adult alive weights of female and male, respectively were found as, 284,58 ± 1,19 g and 296,67 ± 1,13 g. The effect of gender was found to be significant (P<0,001).The average percentage of vitality rates on 1417 broods in 1st week 1st month and 2nd month respectively were determined as, 92,70 %, 74,40 and 73,80. The effect of season on the vitality was found significant (P<0,05, P<0,001). The highest vitality rate was obtained in summer. The effect of hen?s age in 1st and 2nd month was significant (P<0,001), but in 1st week it was found insignificant. In adult pigeons daily feed intake was determined as 21,45 g in spring and summer period while it was determined as 20,97 g in autumn and winter period. As a result, in this study the fertility characteristics and vitality rates obtained for Tumbler Pigeons were found high. Each season in a year the eggs obtained from pigeons and their brood have been observed. Incubation time of the seasons, the effect of incubation of efficiency, egg weight and alive weight was found important but effect of hen?s age was found to be insignificant.Key Words: Tumbler Pigeon, reproduction, growth, vitality.
