Abstract
Timurid architecture, which is characterized by its geometric design principles, spreads over an area including some regions of contemporary Iran, Afghanistan,Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan; consequently, it includes the Karakoyunlu&Akkoyunluterritories in Western Iran. Their artistic legacy constitutes a hybrid of courtly andnomadic cultures.Within this cosmopolite atmosphere, Timurids made their own synthesis. Mainfeatures of 15th century Timurid/Turkmen architectural milieu, which inherited theIlkhanid heritage, elaborated upon by the Jalayirids and Muzaffarids, are the cruciformdome chambers, arch-nets, complex muqarnas vaults and elaborate geometricornaments. These characteristics then inspired the architectural activities of Safavid,Mughal and Ottoman arts. This interaction mostly depends on the Timurid/Turkmenartists that immigrated to Anatolia during the Mongol invasions. Besides,Akkoyunlu&Karakoyunlu Turkmen dynasties played an intermediary role between theTimurid and Ottoman arts. Some monuments from the Timurid/Turkmen area likeBlue Mosque at Tabriz and Masjid-i Shah at Mashad have close relations with Bursa-type Ottoman mosques like Yeşil Mosque, both in plan type and in decorative treatment.15th century Ottoman tile revetments can be ascribed to immigrant craftsmen from Iranworking with local assistants. During the 15th and 16th centuries, a group attached to aceramics workshop, ?Masters of Tabriz?, decorated numerous buildings in Bursa,Edirne and Istanbul. These ceramicists produced cuerda seca and underglaze paintedblue-and-white tiles, which reflect local variants of a Timurid taste. This decorativerepertoire with its strong element of chinoiserie, which developed at the courts fromSamarkand, Herat, Tabriz and transferred to the Ottoman world, continued to beinfluential on Ottoman art until the end of 16th century.
