Abstract

Negative effects of heavy metals on human health and environmental were interpreted and researched quite extensively. Even in these low amounts of metals may lead to organ damage in humans and animals. Also, beside some types of cancer seen in humans, there are data indicating that some problems such as respiratory diseases, memory disorders and organ failure associated metal toxicity. The exposure of heavy metals to humans are through industrial resources, medical waste, pesticides, petroleum products and contaminated foods. The most important ways of exposure to metals are oral and respiratory tract. However, it is also an important way of exposure with skin and we don't have enough information especially possible heavy metal exposure depending on levels of heavy metals on personal care products. In addition, our knowledge of the potential impurities and residue levels found in the composition of cosmetic products in our country. Thus, with the work we perform, we are intended to determine toxic metal levels in foundation and lipstick cosmetics group which sold in our country. In this thesis, 87 products analyzed for heavy metal levels and the quantity of foundations and lipsticks are respectively 35, 52. Samples in foundation group divided according to the color tone and all received samples were analyzed for the level of lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and antimony (Sb). For the analysis of metal levels in these samples Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy was used. An overall evaluation of all the results we obtained, any negative status has not been determined in terms of As, Cd, and Sb, both two personal care products. However, products which examined in the foundation and lipstick group, it was determined that the levels of Cr, Co, Pb, and Ni are detectable amounts. Detected levels of Co and Pb, is far below the exposure limits specified in the international sources and is considered to pose a risk in the sense of toxicological in this regard. The levels of Cr and Ni in the products that are the subject of research are assessed when given a sum of boundary values specified on the metal levels that will be pointed out. However, when interpreted in consideration of exposure route and dose, it was concluded that no risk from a toxicological perspective exists under normal use conditions. There is no relationship between color tone and heavy metal levels in foundation grup. In addition, heavy metal levels which we detected in our study were quite low compared to similar studies in developed and developing countries.
